CATCH A RIDE Set is huge. It's massive. Looking down on it from orbit, it's hard to tell, but you're not getting very far on foot. Add in the usual mix of raging monsters, marauding raiders, and grumpy weather, you'll be lucky just to get from one side of town to the other. Whether it's a motorcycle, a tank, or just a horse with an attitude problem, something to get you there is a good start. A few inches of armor plating and an air supply couldn't hurt, either. You never know when a ditch might open up into a subterranean sea.
The following is a list of all major forms of land, sea, or air transport on Set. This does not cover spacecraft or large, ocean-going vessels, as they often fall under the categories of both permanent housing and transportation. In addition, living creatures used as transportation are not listed here and should instead be placed in their respective Creatures topic. Living creatures artificially developed for use as transportation, however, should be placed in this topic.
This is an open topic. If you'd like to invent a new kind of means of transportation, feel free to post it here! Since Erf is a big, wide-open place, just about anything's possible. Go nuts!

SCRAP WAGONS Role: Variable Producer: Anyone Service Life: N/A Weight: Heavy Propulsion: Unreliable Top Speed: Slow Range: Short Crew: Excessive Passengers: Limited
Out in the middle of nowhere, industry doesn't exist. There are no automobile factories, no parts shops, no used car dealers, nothing. Plenty of people don't even know what a car is. Of the people who do, not many know how to build one. Even when they manage that intellectual hurdle, the result is usually a scrap wagon; a giant pile of junk thrown together in some kind of desperate facsimile of an automobile. Most of them fall apart in a heartbeat. Some don't even make it out of the garage without a good, solid push. Some were put together by people who knew what they were doing, just not with any of the right parts.
Scrap wagons are everything and everywhere. There's no telling what one'll look like, but it's not going to be pretty. They run off of everything from crab-blood biodiesel to scavenged radiothermal power cells. They drive along on wheels, tracks, skis, or even dangerously-unstable maglev hover modules. Some are sad, slow walkers with legs made out of flagpoles and cockpits stolen out of crashed gunships. Some are tanks slathered in so much junk their main gun is fused to the hull. All it takes to build a scrap wagon is a rough idea on how to put an engine together. Everything after that is up to the imagination.
Just about everyone builds scrap wagons. Townsfolk slap them together to move heavy cargo when their crab sleds can't handle the job. Bandits throw around motorcycles and lopsided technicals like they were going out of style. Tech-savvy mercenaries and Loonies alike have both improvised assault guns on a budget. Even the occasional stranded spacer will throw together a maglev sled when the need arises. They're all noisy, slow, and heavy for what they do, but a car's a lot like a gun. Out in the wild territories, it's better to have than to not.

When people think of Looney vehicles, they usually think of the heavy stuff. Beltwinners, Storks, even the rare Kickboxer - it's the stuff no one ever actually sees that gets all the attention. The truth is that most bunkers settle for the smallest they can afford and stay happy with that. The Birddog is exactly that; a no-nonsense armored car best for scouts and raids. It's one of the most common vehicles in the Looney arsenal and one of their oldest. It's gone everywhere from the depths of space to the blights of Evispin. It's hung on for more than a millennium just like countless other Looney designs - and no one's in any hurry to retire it. The Birddog looks about like any other armored car save for its vertical profile. It's a low, angular four-wheeler with a turret only just big enough to fit its ammunition and coolant. Most come off the factory floor with a set of camouflage paintwork engrained into the armor. Weapons run the gamut from double railrifle machine guns up to light particle cannons. Birddogs come with thin armor fit to their recon role, which allows for an impressive speed and battery life. Simple parts and easy access to most systems help keep it out of maintenance for as long as possible. Bunkers use Birddogs for just about everything. They're the go-to vehicle for any bunker looking to chart its home territory. Out near well-to-do bunkers, Birddog patrols are common sights, usually roaming in packs of three or more. They're used for every light passenger role, whether it's sending an emissary off to a town or dropping off an exile in the middle of nowhere. With a particle cannon or a light coilgun, they can snipe tanks or hunt giants. With a trailer or a few extra storage racks, they can handle light cargo work. If the job needs an engine, the Birddog's up to the challenge. The design for the Birddog has been around for so long that most guess it pre-dates the Pioneer Network. It comes up with Loonies crawling out of the Chambers of Myth and bounces around on the MASTER network to help out upstart bunkers. Space Loonies keep Birddogs stocked on occasion for moon-crawling operations. Townsfolk with the industry for motor transport have been imitating its design for centuries. Wrecks turn up in the strangest places. The Loonies still aren't fond of sharing - much less knowing their spacer siblings are playing with them - but the AC105 gets around. Given its solid reputation for speed and reliability, it's not going to be leaving any time soon.

CLONESTON POLICE VANRole: Infantry Fighting Vehicle Producer: Cloneston Service Life: 988 OSC (Estimated) - Present Weight: 3t - 15t Propulsion: Wheeled (x4 - x12), Fuel Cell/Battery Top Speed: 96km/h Range: 595km - 805km Crew: 1 - 3 Passengers: 6 - 18 Capabilities:- Combat Operations - Rough Terrain - Harsh Weather - Contaminated Areas - Vacuum Conditions - Extreme Heat & Cold Equipment:- Dozer Blade - Emergency Lights - Dazzler Headlights - Siren / Loudspeaker - Long-Range Radio Equipment - Combined Optics Array - Shotfinder Microphone Array - Searchlight - Roof-Mounted Powered Turret Defenses:- Cloneston Light Vehicle Plating - Cloneston Hijacker Defense System Weapons:- Turreted:

[/ul] - Auxiliary:

- Riot Dispersal Loudspeakers (1x - 3x)
[/ul] When the clones hit the ground, they're either riding in on a gunship or plowing through the front lawn in an armored van. Cloneston vans aren't anything to scoff at. They're made for the city; they're geared-up to the point that most authorities put them on par with infantry fighting vehicles. They've got electrified hulls that only turn off when the battery goes dead. Up on the plates, they're fitted out with rubber-bullet machine guns and microwave blasters. Down at the bottom, the clones don't bother with less-than-lethal. It's grenade launchers and armor-piercing rounds all the way. One of the odd facts about Cloneston vans is that they're built for serious offroading. It's just a matter of course for the clones. At the bottom, roads are usually half-covered in rubble and toxic sewage. The wastelands outside don't have any roads, but they're still full of all kinds of fugitives and threats. As a bit of a side effect, stolen Cloneston vans turn up just about everywhere on Set. Out in the meatscapes, down in the underground, even prowling the bottom of the sea. A few have even been seen up in orbit, nicked by snarky garbage haulers. The clones never seem to have any trouble replacing them, so more just turn out across the wastes and elsewhere. Cloneston's police force doesn't have a snappy name for their door-crashers. The people in the city don't, either; only about a tenth of the population has actually seen one in person. Most people know they exist, but most vans are down at the bottom of the city. Some people pun it up with "police bruisers", but most just call them by their classic names - "cattle car", "meat wagon", and so on. "Clown car" is a popular one - they're rated for at most eighteen people on the biggest, but people have seen anywhere from twenty to forty clones step out of the same vehicle. Production on Cloneston's armored van happens just about everywhere in the city. There's no standard format for them, either. They usually fit all their operational specifications, but that's about it. Some look like black-and-white eighteen-wheelers, others are tanks without the tracks. They all fit the profile of a military vehicle, but it's hard to tell what the specifics are going to be. Hackers in Cloneston usually make a game out of their production lines, too. Random gibberish branded onto the hull, sirens playing obnoxious music instead - things can get difficult when a hacked van shows up. Cloneston vans aren't built solely in Cloneston, either. Out in the wasteland, mutants and yokels think building their home like one will keep the clones out at night. Out in the wider world, a few well-to-do towns build their own off stolen or leaked blueprints. Up in orbit, some spacers keep clone vans with oversized suspension systems. They put them down on occasion as moonwalk rovers. The intimidating profile and jaw-dropping performance have helped turn one of the most hated sights in Cloneston into a favorite elsewhere.
