This topic is a child of the Well of Japes article directory.
SPACE SHENANIGANS
The Well's effects go up as far as high orbit. Thermodynamics and electromagnetism start to get confusing when you drift past. Sensors start reporting ghost ships passing by. Weather rises up to choke the space above; rain, lightning, birds. Gravity starts pulling double shifts to bring stations down to Erf. Spaceward clouds carry along psychic screams. Geodisplacement events and paranormal activity conspire together to shoot gouts of magma at stray ships. Sometimes, there's just an aura of purple drifting by. When they're not cringing or cursing, spacers call it by a simple, straightforward title; the Japes Sector.
Officially, the Japes Sector is known as the "Anomaly Bravo Interorbital Hazard Sector", both to Unity Station and most Space Looney fleets. It's the place spacers don't go unless they're daft or desperate. It's flooded with wrecks, junk fields, and dead stations, leftover from ill-fated attempts to push through. The debris complicates problems even more - and not just by being in the way. Garbage haulers regularly try to probe the Japes Sector for salvage. Harvester drones follow suit, usually with a bit more tact than their trashy cousins. Neither are terribly friendly to unexpected guests.
For the most part, spacers ignore the place. Even geared-up Space Looney fleets give the Japes Sector a wide berth. Stations, on the other hand, usually don't have a choice. Every once in a while, a geodisplacement event or orbital mismanagement sends a station cluster into the sector. It's a horrible experience for everyone involved. Ships have the luxury of engines, navigation, and a smaller profile. Stations are limited to orbital maneuvering thrusters - which don't count for much when reflexes start to matter.
Weather and wreckage from the Japes Sector mostly keep to themselves, but it's not unusual for something to drift out for a quick prank or two. On the outskirts of the sector, teleporting wrecks are common. They fall into hotspots of geodisplacement activity and warp around whenever nobody's looking. Some turn into vicious clouds of metallic goop, hunting down ships that get too close. Junk storms rage like tornados of trash. Gravitational anomalies yoink nearby ships into the mix like giant magnets. Others shoot garbage and nebulae off to stir up trouble in the nicer parts of orbit.
