THE SPACE LOONIES
Bound together in the countless fleets and flotillas wandering across orbit are the Space Loonies, Set's enigmatic spaceborne custodians. Alien nomads, human outcasts, and synthetic creatures alike exist in a state of relative peace amidst the scrap fields and derelicts high above. As with their planetside cousins, the Space Loonies are tough, self-sufficient, and largely independent of one another. Fleets drift across Set's orbit with little more concern than finding fuel aboard derelicts or salvaging parts from wrecks. Despite it all, the Space Loonies are responsible - with striking indifference - for the health and wealth of Set's trade and habitation platforms.
Compared with their planetside brethren, the Space Loonies share their name purely by way of history. Long in the past, they were once a component of the planet-dwelling Loonies. Disagreements over the employment of non-humans led to the Big Split, which resulted in the Space Loonies' expulsion into orbit. Despite this, the Space Loonies remain Loonies at their core. Survivalists in the extreme, militarized by necessity, and only loosely affiliated with eachother, the Space Loonies are, in practice, hardly much different than their cousins on the ground.
The Space Loonies are not, however, an integral element of Set's affairs. They do not appear from nothingness, nor can they easily split apart to form new fleets. As with the rest of Set's orbital infrastructure, the Space Loonies are in a curious state of decay, held in check only by their will to survive and shield one another. As a result, the Space Loonies are markedly more willing to cooperate - particularly against the Cult of Meat - than their more self-assured relatives.
An icon unofficially known as the "Orbital Hourglass". While it specifically represents the Joint Orbital Defense Command, many use it to represent the Space Loonies as a whole.
