This topic is a child of the Loonies article directory.
WHO SAID IT HAD TO MAKE SENSE?
The Loonies are named for their survivalist doctrine and baffling prevalence across Set. One way or another, each Looney facility is dedicated to standing on its own, without assistance, no matter where it is or what circumstances it lies in. Looney bunkers are found everywhere from the deepest, darkest tundras to the deepest, darkest depths of the sea. Active volcanoes, caustic wastelands, anomalous jungles, even orbiting asteroids - if it exists, a Looney bunker is somewhere inside it.
The Loonies are split into two separate flavors; the mainstay Loonies, who operate almost exclusively on Set, and the Space Loonies, who work primarily from spacecraft in orbit. Despite their implied affiliation, there is a significant rift between the Loonies and their spaceborne counterparts. Cooperation between the two halves of the Loonies is virtually non-existent. While hostilities are rare, attempts at resolving their differences have yielded little success.
Looney culture is dominated by the gap between their own and everyone else. "Civilians", "locals", "wildlife" - Looney dealings with outsiders are as much tinted by xenophobia as they are by their military lifestyle. "Stickfingers", "bugs", and as many insulting nicknames as can be invented are used - very regularly - to describe Space Loonies, human or otherwise. Despite it all, Looney culture is as much self-effacing as it is scathing. The title of "Looney" is one worn with pride. The suggestion of insanity is generally taken as a compliment.
This extends further to the naming of individual Looney facilities. Most use callsigns derived from mental illnesses or phobias to identify them. Examples include Agoraphobia-33, Sociopathy-50, and Ectophobia-12. Some even go so far as adopting them as their public names, such the Madness Command Post and Camp Cainophobia. This practice is rare and most prefer the surname of a founding administrator, such as the Demmitt Command Post, Fort Williamson, and the Zhukov Command Post.
