They appear from various pseudocrustacean populations across the planet and typically emerge with most of their predecessors' traits. As a result, there are few definitive distinctions between sentient pseudocrustaceans and their unintelligent peers. This is further exacerbated by their level of intermingling; often times, sentient pseudocrustaceans exist peacefully with closely-related feral populations. Some are even able to exert sway and use them as beasts of burden. Under most conditions, behavior is all that sets the sentient aside from the wild.

GENERAL DIFFERENCES There are several common morphological variances present in many sentient populations. Many rest higher on their legs as a result of exoskeleton modifications along their abdomen. Roughly half of all sentient pseudocrustaceans have an additional pair of smaller, more dexterous pincers formed from their forelegs, which are often used for grasping. Some present with segmented pincers, and a portion of these populations have a third claw for each pincer. Sentient pseudocrustaceans often have larger heads, larger eyes or additional eyes, and longer antennae than feral populations.
Internally, sentient pseudocrustaceans typically feature significantly larger, denser, and longer nerve cords. Many populations suffer from significant organ displacement or even outright disruption as a result of the increased size of the cord. A great deal of internal physiology is modified to support the larger cord, including larger hearts, lungs, and denser circulatory systems. In absence of other changes, musculature is rarely modified. As a result, pseudocrustaceans with significantly larger heads may suffer from a notable droop, depending on their fitness.
