Young & Lively
Novenholdt was settled relatively late in the Garrant Commonwealth's expansion on June 18th, 1801 A.F., but even during its beginnings, few could say the colony did not have a future ahead of it.
Following the inclusion of the Fourth Arm Reliants and Praetorian Federation into the Coalition of Human Systems, the Commonwealth began a long, almost unchecked expansion across worlds it had previously deemed hazardous to acquire, of poor value, or in politically unfavorable positions. With the two considerable military powers backing their expanditure, Garran settlers moved quickly through space to capitalize on these new prospects, establishing at least sixteen new holdings in the first ten years alone. While seven would be consigned to failure as the worlds they settled failed to meet expectations, the rapid series of colonizations would set the tone for the rate of Garran expansion for another century and a half.
Novenholdt would not be a pioneer, nor trendsetter, but would rise to be a success story many others had hoped and still hope for in their own endeavours. Initially, the constant rainstorms, little arable land, and positioning near two holdings of the Timosi Republic - the Commonwealth's primary colonial competitor - left it a poor choice. However, as the Federal Navy and the Naval Defense Forces of the Reliants became more involved in defending Coalition-aligned planets, the thought of acquiring Novenholdt was given much more consideration. And, upon settling the world, the colonists immediately found that the concerns about the planet itself were far less severe than they had been predicted to be; areas of low rainfall were simple to find and most often supported their own thriving clusters of native vegetation. As time went on, cities and Commonwealth Armed Forces bases sprung up in these areas as word spread, soon bringing the colony to a level sizable enough to maintain its own divisions in the Commonwealth's Rangers.
As the colony grew, so, too, did its agriculture. With native plantlife already well-established before the settlers had arrived, it was only natural that Novenholdt would go on to be a significant food source for less developed colonies or holdings otherwise incapable of supplying themselves. With this agricultural success came thriving commerce, elevating the colony to a local trade hub.
Further building on Novenholdt's booming agricultural capacity, a new development would stir not long after the planet saw the recognition many had expected it to recieve. With modern agricultural practices adapting to Novenholdt's almost year-round rain and Anchorage crops intermingling with native food plants, it was not simply the colonists that adapted to Novenholdt, but the plantlife to them. During 1861 A.F. alone, at least ten different species of naturally hybridized plants were discovered on farm fields, growing in place of some of the ordinary crops. Initially, they were deemed useless mutants, unsuitable for human consumption and, at worst, agricultural parasites. However, as these plants were given further study, their properties eventually became clear; their mixing with Anchorage crops and commonly grown spices had given a number of species a powerful natural anaesthetic, driving up their demand in the pharmaceutical market and further escalating Novenholdt's rise to fame.
However, as the saying goes, nothing is without consequence, so it was only to be expected that the "novenherbs", as they had come to be called, would be used for something less than applaudable. Almost simultaneously with their rise in demand as a sedative in the medical field, novenherbs would see use as recreational drugs in a brief scare that had found its way into Garran news headlines for at least two years. Alongside it, criminal organizations and small-time drug dealers took advantage of the time the plants were unrestricted and developed their own crops, bringing a darker side to the agricultural hotspot. Eventually, novenherbs came under the attention of the Commonwealth's government and were very quickly restricted to only a few select license holders - primarily government-owned farms, as the license to grow and sell the plants proved to be difficult to acquire, even for the most well-established agricultural businesses. Despite this - or, as most believe, because of it - the drug trade on Novenholdt only continued to grow, bringing with it a small, yet significant black market economy as pirates and smugglers came into the employ of illicit growers in need of transport for their product. Like the agriculture and general trade success the planet hosts, the drug trade has shown no signs of stalling, its own success stories climbing beside those of the farmers and businessmen operating within the confines of the law.
As of the present, Novenholdt is home to some of the most seasoned veterans of the Rangers. The Novenholdt divisions, while not as famous as others such as the Juningrad divisions, are well-recognized for their acts during the Tharkadian War of First Contact in 2100 A.F., where their experience alongside the Garran Space Navy - most notably in the almost unending seizures of pirate vessels and civilian rescue operations the underworld presence necessitates - came into its own in the boarding actions against both Timosi and Verinen ships. Additionally, during the events of the Timosi War of 2185 A.F., the Novenholdt divisions distinguished themselves yet again in jungle warfare, their experience both on their homeworld and in the close quarters fighting aboard spaceborne vessels bringing the quick thinking and tactical awareness necessary to both work with and fight back against the unconventional warfare often practiced in such terrain.
Today, Novenholdt divisions number in roughly 2,400, encompassing at least 2,000 men each and totalling at roughly 5 million rangers. With the planet's commercial and agricultural success continuing - and growing - to this day, that number is likely to expand as time goes on.
