The Truth of War
Truth's Legion is a resistance organization composed of former soldiers dissatisfied with how their country utilizes or utilized its military, taking it upon themselves to fight back against what they feel are unjustified conflicts. These men and women represent one of the most highly-trained criminal organizations in human space and are a highly visible threat to states prone to conflict, as their mere presence is a significant strain on morale.
Truth's Legion is not just a paramilitary organization, however. They also represent a highly morally-conscious political faction that has found its way into several nations, notably the Garrant Commonwealth and Vannik Confederation. While not a major party as of 2203 A.F., their numbers and political influence are steadily increasing as war with the Inkron becomes more and more likely.
History
In 2130 A.F., several months after the conclusion of the short conflict between the Praetorian Federation and the developing Gongev Authority, a number of retired guardsmen saw the conflict as the final straw against the Federal High Command. As it became clear that no other country would step in to return the conquered Gongev territories to their rightful owner, their discontent began to grow. Eventually, these scattered former soldiers united through the use of social networking sites hosted outside the Federation, where they could express their frustration freely. As more discontented soldiers, both retired and in service, found their way to the group, its numbers began to swell.
Resultant from the continued skirmishes made by shocktroopers against the Gongev Authority, more and more disgruntled personnel found their way to the organization, now known simply as Truth. As expected, the conflict re-escalated, pulling the Commonwealth in - reluctantly - on the side of the Federation. Soon, rangers and other Armed Forces servicemen found themselves among the ranks of Truth, fully aware that this one-sided war had been started purely for the sake of conquest.
In June of 2130, Truth organized a meeting between Coalition troops active in the Gongev theater. The result was some 340 rangers and guardsmen alike leaving their posts to gather in an isolated region in the eastern territories of Gongev. Upon arriving at their destination, those 340 were joined by a number of retired and deserting servicemen from many different nations. In total, the first gathering of Truth's Legion was 442, with at least two hundred more present via video communications and other direct forms of contact.
It was there and then that this mass of deserters and retirees renamed the organization to Truth's Legion, seeing it as their duty now to strike back against those undertaking unjust wars, such as the one already in progress. However, it was plainly clear that fighting back now - particularly since much of the guardsmen present would most certainly be hunted by shocktroop death squads - would be foolish and doom the Legion before it could truly make an impact.
The decision to exit the theater of conflict was quite possibly the most intelligent made by the Legion during its development. The unexpected departure of several hundred Coalition personnel left the Federal officers in charge of the death squads clueless as to their whereabouts, allowing Truth's Legion to grow unfettered.
In 2182, as the growing tensions between the Garrant Commonwealth and Timosi Republic became apparent, Truth's Legion found itself growing to numbers it had never anticipated. Timosi soldiers, concerned for their lives and unable to withdraw from service, found their way to the Legion. Their ranger counterparts followed suit soon after as dissatisfaction with going to war with another Anchorage nation set in amongst the Armed Forces.
However, this sharp influx of new recruits dropped off as quickly as it had began when war became all but certain. A drive to see a quick resolution to the upcoming conflict arose among those nations involved and few potential recruits saw Truth's Legion as a means to end it. This general attitude continued throughout the war, despite it lasting some four years and costing nearly eight million lives. During the war, however, Truth's Legion became far more active than it ever had been, putting it's headcount of nearly fifty thousand to work against the Praetorian Federation, Republic of Tharkad, Garrant Commonwealth, and Verinen Permanos Regentic. With an established officer corps, the Legion regularly decided critical conflicts, notably the crushing defeat the Armed Forces encountered at the Battle of Krelstek, soon after the mining settlement of Tsirvana had supposedly been secured. With the Coalition intelligence network sabotaged by the Ollenhall Administration - a state which would persist until 2187 and not be fully rectified until late 2188 - the Legion was able to establish a name for itself during the war, bringing in far more new recruits following the conflict than it could properly manage.
Today, the militant arm of Truth's Legion is engaged in a small-scale conflict against the Federation, mostly involving skirmishes with patrols and raids against smaller outposts. However, during conflicts with Tsarova and pirate forces, the Legion has been known to strike against any it feels has committed itself to a war not justified, be it in its own eyes or the majority's.
