A World Gone Mad
Tsarova is one of the few civilizations capable of practical interstellar space travel that does not have any holdings outside of its home planet. While almost unbelievable in this modern age of space commerce and colonial expansion, the reasons are very apparent and very compelling; almost 94% of the population on the planet of Tsarova suffer from psychological disorders, ranging from simple attention problems to full-blown schizophrenia. To this day, no hard facts have been uncovered on how it remains stable and relatively united despite its practically unmanageable state.
History
It is unknown when Tsarova's generation ship landed or how successful the initial colonists were - or whether the planet was settled by a generation ship at all. In fact, most of Tsarova's history is unknown, as the few sources for any solid facts about the planet's past are completely unreliable at best.
It is believed that the planet was colonized not unlike most others, but as the colonists began to raise new generations, Tsarova's ecosystem began to take its toll.
While the planet's environment is practically a paradise, its atmosphere is filled with various bacteria and other microscopic organisms that disturb human psychological development. An individual raised in a normal environment would see little - if any - symptoms resultant from this and experience no lasting effects, but an individual who had spent their life on Tsarova would most likely be clinically insane.
And as generations passed, the colonists, likely trapped on the planet, succumbed to the lunacy that would dominate their society. It is thought that, as colonial administrators were replaced by those raised on the planet, the population growth protocols put in place at the initial landing were left unchecked. Likewise, preventitive measures against Tsarova's ecosystem were never enacted.
It is also believed that the few cunning and intelligent enough to thrive in such a harsh and unpredictable society emerged silently as its rulers. As these men established power, iron-fisted dictatorships rose with them. Few would be able to contest such regimes from within, as the difficult and fractious nature of Tsarova's population makes rebellion all but impossible. Many believe that those in places of power use this to their advantage, choosing only a select few to keep sane as their personal advisors and leading military officers. The almost intolerable conditions under Tsarova's governments support this, as a sane population would likely have rebelled long ago.
Tsarova's expanditure onto the interstellar stage is widely regarded as the worst colonial mistake the Ollenhall Administration has ever made. Much like its blundering at Anchorage, an Ollenhall colonial vessel attempted to land on Tsarova. The colonists and light security force aboard were met by both the precursors to the modern day Worldcorps and the fearful population of the city near their landing zone. The crew aboard was slaughtered with little resistance as an angry mob, directed by the corpsmen heading the investigation, descended upon the ship without warning.
Before the ship could be dismantled or destroyed by the mob, the corpsmen brought it to their nearest military installation, where it - or, rather, its engine - was studied and eventually reverse-engineered. What resulted was a massive, disorganized colonial effort by the nation that had acquired it, most vessels bound for Juneau in the Faith system.
What resulted from this effort was one of the bloodiest, most costly wars in human history as an unprepared and fledgling Anchorage Colonial Authority was forced to bring its combined military strength to bear on wave after wave of poorly assembled Tsarova military ships, dispatched in response to the colonial fleet's seizure and partial destruction by the Garrant Commonwealth's 2nd Homeguard Fleet. As more and more Tsarova ships slipped past the relatively small Anchorage defense fleets, a terrifying ground war began on Juneau's surface, where soldiers of Anchorage nations faced off with tides of poorly equipped and untrained militiamen almost literally falling from the sky.
It would take roughly 6 million troops and 700,000 Garran civilians over the course of seven years until the invading nation on Tsarova had finally depleted itself, soon to be picked apart by its neighbors. Casualty counts for Tsarova are still only an estimate to this day, ranging from 12 million to 15 million, but reflect well the modern military capabilities of the Worldcorps and Groundcorps.
This was the first and last of Tsarova's attempts at interstellar colonization, as even the maddened population on their homeworld is unwilling to repeat the Tsarova Contact War, as it is known to Anchorage historians. As of this day, the relatively light interstellar activity Tsarova participates in are the raids and random assaults led by rogue military officers of the Worldcorps and Groundcorps alike, which - while woefully underequipped and almost trivial to drive off - present a constant threat to colonial endeavours and interstellar commerce.
Military
Two primary organizations are known in the Tsarova military forces; the Worldcorps and Groundcorps. Both represent varying levels of unity between the nations of Tsarova.
The Worldcorps represent some of the finest troops Tsarova has to offer in a united force operating with the blessing of most or all of the nations on their homeworld. However, "finest" must be taken with a grain of salt; the Worldcorps are still a Tsarova military force and thus are comprised mostly of badly trained and poorly equipped soldiers organized into little more than angry mobs, deemed militia. These mobs are herded into battle by those sane enough to be fit for leadership, usually outfitted with very heavy powered armor and weapons. While hardly as stable as an ordinary soldier, these troops - usually referred to as corpsmen - often act as the centerpiece of a unit, providing suppressing fire for assaults and engaging in more complex tactical maneuvers while the militia act as a distraction.
The exception to this rule, however, is the I Worldcorps, which functions much like a modern military force. This unit, however, is very rarely seen deployed against nations unaffiliated with Tsarova and is believed to be used as a sort of peacekeeping force on their homeworld.
Worldcorps units are often identified with their crimson-on-white armor and equipment. The only deviant from this pattern is - once again - the I Worldcorps, which utilizes camouflage patterns commonplace among most other militaries.
The Groundcorps are not a single military entity, but many. Their level of training, equipment, and mental stability vary wildly depending on the unit, but few are ready to go toe-to-toe with the space nations around Tsarova. It is thought that the Groundcorps are often "surplus population" pressed into military service and sent on suicidal attempts at forcing a colony from a competitor's grasp.
Often times, Groundcorps units emulate the Worldcorps, using less maddened soldiers in leadership positions to press conscripted mobs into action.
Technology
The state of technological development on Tsarova is difficult to understand and still uncertain at this time. It is believed that, much like the governments therein, leaders on Tsarova hand-pick intelligent and sane individuals from the population to serve as scientists and economic managers.
As there is such a small portion of the population capable of true scientific and industrial advances, much of Tsarova is practically backwards in living conditions and technology. Cities appear barely out of the industrial age and motor vehicles are almost exclusively restricted to government employees. Military equipment is constantly in short supply and, often times, entire units go into battle equipped with little more than poorly manufactured uniforms and whatever they can pick up in the field.
It is unknown just what will happen when Tsarova eventually exhausts its natural resources. As its nations have little capability, nor desire to settle on other planets, likely for fear that their regimes may fall to united dissent as a result, no one can truly say what might happen when that day comes.
