The Ollenhall Administration
The Ollenhall Administration is the name of the current government presiding over a region of space somewhere beyond the Coalition's furthest borders. The Ollenhall have a very high level of technological sophistication thanks to their unfettered progress following the landing of their generation ship, Refuge.
The Ollenhall share a volatile relationship with the Verinen, often alternating between close allies or bitter enemies depending on the political climate between the two. Both are democratic republics with a high emphasis on clean ethics, justice, and equality among the civilian populace.
However, among the military, it is almost the opposite. Recruitment for the armed forces is based solely on forceful conscription and brainwashing, followed by rigorous genetic and cybernetic augmentation to create supposedly perfect soldiers. However, this eliminates most capability for individual creativity and often leads to field officers being just as qualified to lead as those they are charged with. This, combined with the arrogance imprinted upon them by their supposedly superior training and equipment, has led to a number of military embarassments, particularly against the mobile light infantry forces of Anchorage nations and the adaptive planning of Tharkadian commanders.
The Ollenhall Administration is well-known by military historians for being the sole cause of the Coalition intelligence breakdown during and before the Timosi War. For years before the war broke out, the Administration had quietly infiltrated and sabotaged the intelligence networks of the Coalition's leading nations in an attempt to turn the powerful alliance against itself. This sabotage was discovered soon after the costly siege of the Darmstalldt system, where a lack of communication and early reconnaissance missions cost the lives of many Coalition troops. With a series of shocking failures occurring alongside the almost pyrrhic victory at Tivovnik, an investigation was launched into the cause of these serious lapses. Shortly after the network was exposed, almost four hundred Ollenhall spies and corrupt officials were captured and executed for capital treason by the Garrant Commonwealth's Central Network of Military Intelligence.
Following this discovery, the Coalition has been at odds with the Ollenhall Administration. Further straining relations are the isolated skirmishes Ollenhall forces have fought against Coalition troops since, which the Ollenhall have been quick to deny as officers acting of their own accord and acting based on their personal beliefs.
The relationship with the Verinen is no coincidence. The Ollenhall were part of a generation ship that travelled beside another, the other having fallen off its original course after its navigation systems failed. The two reached their destination at Ollenhall, a lush paradise the likes of which have rarely been seen. The partner ship, in an attempt to secure its own world and its own future, landed on the planet Tervinn, a desert world with an oxygen atmosphere. Due to the obvious constraints of time and fuel, Tervinn was located in the same system as Ollenhall, being just a two month journey from the edge of the star system.
As the two developed, it immediately became clear that each lacked what the other had; where Tervinn was rich in valuable materials, Ollenhall could support agriculture of a scale its counterpart could never dream of. After space travel became practical once more, the two attempted to initiate long-term trade agreements, but these eventually broke down as each wanted more than the other was willing to supply. As time went on, Ollenhall eventually took Tervinn by force, driving much of the former colonists from the planet. After a long period of going from planet to planet in search of a new home, these colonists eventually happened upon Alstannes, a desert world supporting a thriving oxygen-based ecosystem. The colonists settling here would eventually become the Verinen, who soon developed into an isolationist nation suspicious of everything around it.
Compared to the more outwardly hostile Verinen, the Ollenhall Administration is significantly less militant and far more subversive, often utilizing pirates, raiders, and mercenaries to quietly launch attacks on their competitors. To date, the Ollenhall have only been involved in one full-scale conflict, which began shortly after the Verinen assaulted one of their colonial holdings. Shortly after this battle, which was a decisive victory for the Verinen, the two powers returned to peace, considering the dispute settled.
