Courage & Honor
The Stormtroopers are the most indispensable personnel the Garrant Commonwealth has to offer. They stand head and shoulders above the Rangers and MIAV units, having distinguished themselves time and time again against all odds.
More than that, the Stormtroopers represent some of the finest special forces personnel on Anchorage. In their ranks lies a near-perfect mixture of bravery, cunning, talent, and respect, earning them the reputation as some of the finest soldiers to command and fight beside.
Purpose
The Stormtroopers were founded in 1088 A.F. as a response to the growing tensions between the Commonwealth and the now-defunct Marroli Republic. During the war that followed in 1089, the Stormtroopers distinguished themselves as the greatest survivalists Anchorage had ever seen.
Originally, they were to serve as an almost independent fighting force, using their own chain of command and operational procedures. Stormtroopers would be dropped deep behind enemy lines and left to fight on their own, striking at supply routes and undefended areas. For the most part, they used what the enemy used, often being supplied with captured enemy uniforms and equipment prior to a mission.
Today, the Stormtroopers are far better known for their skill on the battlefield than their capability for surviving in areas no other could. Stormtroopers now operate under the Ranger branch of the military, albeit with enough autonomy that they could be considered as their own branch of the Commonwealth Armed Forces. Their directives today are as follows:
- Perform special operations and intelligence gathering against enemy forces in the field in support of operations within the designated combat theater.
- Provide experienced soldiers to support or spearhead significant Ranger and MIAV operations within the designated combat theater.
- Perform operations with the risk of disrupting civilian, political, or internal Armed Forces affairs.
- Perform operations which may come in contact with previously unknown alien forces or technology.
- Provide experienced soldiers to operate alongside allied forces in non-critical operations or internal affairs, including operations with the risk of disrupting civilian or political affairs as requested by the allied government.
Organization
Stormtroopers are organized into two standard units; divisions and squads.
Divisions are the overall command structure of a given set of squads. Often times, these divisions are trained for specific purposes, such as reconnaissance, urban warfare, and so on. The exception is the 1st Stormtroopers, which is composed of reassigned veterans from other divisions, ordinarily senior squad leaders or Alpha squad members selected by a squad leader from the 1st.
Stormtrooper divisions have widely varying personnel counts, but average at 100 personnel per division.
Squads are the most widely recognized Stormtrooper units. Depending on assignment, they are organized in a single team of 4-9 men led by a field captain or field sergeant. It is rare to see an independent squad with a full ten members, as these deployments are typically reserved for Echo squad units and full force engagements, the latter of which is almost unheard of.
Squads of different designations are typically organized in a unique fashion, but many are simply made into generalist teams with similar operating methods.
An average Stormtrooper division's squads are organized as follows:
- ALPHA - Veteran squad primarily used for so-called "black operations" and full force engagements. The leader of this squad is often a candidate for reassignment to the 1st.
- BRAVO - Generalist squad, commonly biased towards urban warfare.
- CHARLIE - Generalist squad, commonly biased towards open field warfare.
- DELTA - Generalist squad, commonly biased towards arctic warfare.
- ECHO - Support squad deployed alongside Ranger battalions.
- FAHVIN - Support squad deployed alongside MIAV detachments.
- GALYG - Generalist squad, usually unspecialized. This squad is normally not a true squad, but the unit designation for all personnel not on duty or not assigned to an active squad.
Recruitment
Stormtrooper recruitment is a vague process which very few can claim to fully understand. Most divisions recruit new personnel on their own basis, which varies just as much as their personnel count and squad organization.
What is generally known about the recruitment process is that it begins shortly before a ranger completes his basic training. These fresh personnel are combed through for individuals who are considered to have the potential to fulfill the standards of discipline and talent that the Stormtroopers require.
Beyond basic training, the Stormtroopers often select their new recruits from veteran sergeants in the Rangers and those in both the MIAV and Ranger divisions who achieve feats of extraordinary courage or tactical genius.
There is also another method of recruitment which the Stormtroopers have little control over and few are actually aware of.
When a ranger or MIAV crewman is a witness of a black operation or other such highly secretive military operation, they are often selected for immediate reassignment into an Echo or Fahvin squad of a Stormtrooper division, as opposed to being detained, discharged, or otherwise removed from the Armed Forces. As a nation that puts its economic viability above almost all else, the logic behind this is that it would be an absolute waste to discharge the serviceman in question after expending a significant amount of time and money on their equipment and training. And, as all Stormtroopers are required to swear their silence on any and all operations they undertake until their death or disclosure of the assignment, where those who break this oath are executed for treason, Echo and Fahvin squads represent a simple way to turn a potential loss into a profit. This also enables the Armed Forces to dodge a potentially significant series of public relations hits, as word reaching the public of soldiers being jailed through no fault of their own could easily tarnish the respectable relationship the Commonwealth's military has built for itself.
After recruitment into the Stormtroopers, the fresh candidate can no longer speak about the incident they witnessed to personnel outside of the Stormtroopers. This gives the Commonwealth the legal right and obligation to execute anyone who discusses such sensitive information, as the government would ordinarily be stepping beyond its bounds to execute a Ranger or MIAV crewman for anything save for full-blown treason. As few are willing to turn down the prestigious stature of a stormtrooper, much less the significant pay raise and hazardous duty bonuses associated with it, this practice has rarely been unsuccessful.
For this reason, those serving in Echo squads are normally looked down upon by "full" Stormtroopers as simple secret-keepers as opposed to those who fulfill the standards of a Stormtrooper. These personnel are often referred to derogatorily as "tight-lips", "eyes", "conscripts", and "draftees", among other, less friendly terms.
As of 2203 A.F., the Stormtroopers number at 980,000, where Echo and Fahvin squads make up approximately 200,150 of this count. The total count of Stormtrooper divisions is 1,031, with the 1032nd's creation under review by Central Command in Junholdt. During peacetime, 800,000 of their total numbers are either reassigned as guards at the National Assembly in Cehoma and Central Command in Junholdt, or remain deactivated and reintegrated into civilian life. The 180,000 remaining are placed under the authority of various colonial governments in the Commonwealth's territory, where they are used to suppress and discourage pirate raids, Tsarova attacks, and other common military threats during peacetime.
